In memory mode, a relatively small amount of DRAM is used as a cache for much larger pool of non-volatile memory (NVRAM). The system memory capacity presented to the OS is the amount of Optane memory. Generally, memory usage beyond the DRAM capacity will write to the Optane modules, which is roughly a few factors slower than DRAM, but orders of magnitude faster than NVMe. The benefit to the user is a great increase in virtual memory capacity at a price point far below DRAM. In the present configuration, the NVRAM/DRAM capacity ratio is 8 (6TB/768GB), although this can be changed up or down depending on your needs.
